Sushi in Spain | Aburi, Rota Spain

Back when I started writing professionally, I was first and foremost a food blogger. I was obsessed with food, talking about each ingredient on the plate like it was a lead character in a play. I’d read books of (the now late) Anthony Bourdain and obsess over food articles and reviews like no tomorrow.

It’s been a while since I went back to food blogging — I blame my tight jeans — yet sometimes, I come across restaurants that throw me completely off guard. Ones that make me feel like it would be a crime not to rave about them.

And so begins this review on one of my favorite havens in Rota, Spain: Aburi.

I know a review on a Japanese restaurant located in Spain isn’t really one of the best things to talk about — I mean, what with all the endless choices of tapas and paella out there. But trust me when I say that a full 3 months in Spain will have you looking for other cuisines outside of Europe.

Skin Dragon (10.50 Euros) 4.5 out of 5 on the DO scale

I love a good dragon roll and try to order it every time I’m in a sushi restaurant — whichever country I’m in.

Aburi’s Skin Dragon tucks in the crispy skin of grilled salmon and is then decorated with salmon and ikura roe on top. As if that alone wasn’t enough, it’s also topped with sesame seeds, fresh chives, and eel sauce.

YOU GUYS. Words can’t say how amazing the two kinds of salmon in the sushi are. The crispy skin is such a great contrast to the salmon placed on top of the sushi.

Goma Wakame (7.5 Euros) (5 out of 5 on the DO scale.

To be honest, I would’ve never tried this dish had someone else did and loved it because I mean, I go to a Japanese restaurant for either sashimi or sushi -- nothing else.

Goma Wakame is essentially a cold seaweed salad but it’s got so much flavor. Aburi’s version has avocado at the base and is mixed with Japanese dressing. I can’t recommend this dish enough. In fact, I’m a little mad at myself that I didn’t eat this sooner.

Atun Crujiente 9.5 (5/5 DO)

Apart from Aburi’s Skin Dragon, another sushi order that we always order every chance we get is the Atun Crujiente. It’s a crunchy tuna futomaki with spicy mayonnaise, fried onions, and fresh chives.

Vergs and I tried this roll during a delivery order and we were so floored. 100% would recommend with satisfaction guaranteed!

So apparently, I've really grown to love Aburi because as luck would have it, I've actually remembered that I've posted about its offerings in my March favorites vlog of this year. Ah yes, that month was a good one. We practically ate there/had items delivered at least once a week. What can I say? When it comes to comfort food, sushi's definitely at the top of our list!
