Self-Care on a Friday
Self-care is usually reserved for the weekends. On slow down Sundays when all that’s on the agenda is go to Mass, eat brunch, and return back to bed in an effort to recuperate from the week that was.
Not gonna lie, my last weekend was spent out with the family, and although I loved every minute of bonding with my husband’s cousins and his adorable niece, a part of me couldn’t shake off the deadlines I had for the following week.
Lately, I’ve been trying to get myself accustomed to more self-care practices. As much as I’d like to say that my Sundays are work-free, the reality is they aren’t. My weekdays are usually crazy and I always end up asking myself where has the time gone, so I try as much as I can to spread out my deliverables even over the weekend.
Friday nights though are my sacred spot.
It’s pretty funny, to be honest. Everybody loves Friday nights because they’re usually downtown drinking with friends or something of that sort. I, on the other hand, adore my Friday nights-in spent on the bed, without a care in the world.
I swear, I’m such a grandma at times. Haha!
Here’s a rundown of my self-care tips for Friday nights:
1. Dress Down with a Robe
I’m all for being bougie during self-care nights because things like robes make such a difference for me. Since I’m from the Philippines, I’m still incredibly shocked at how the prices for grooming are here in San Diego. I mean, don’t even get me started on waxes here because, for the record, a Brazilian wax costs only $15 in the PH!
Yes, clearly I have a lot of feelings about waxing. Haha!
I’ve been trying my hardest not to spend as much when it comes to skincare and grooming, so I do as much as I can to up my self-care plan without spending too much. This is why I love my robe so much. Besides the fact that it’s personalized and that I had it made for our wedding, I’m so fond of it because (i don’t know how else to say this but…) it makes me feel like I’m living a life of luxury.
And I mean, who doesn’t want to feel that during a self-care pamper sesh, right?
2. Set The Mood
I used to roll my eyes whenever people would mention tips about how dimmed lighting helps with relaxation. But I don’t think I’ve ever felt as strongly about this until now.
For the longest time, I’ve been afraid of complete darkness, so I’d always prefer the room I’m in to be super bright and well-lit… which is also usually why it would take me ages before I fall asleep.
I digress. I spend my self-care nights with dimmed lights because it just makes the room feel more of a spa. Someone told me before to play relaxing music as well, but too often it just makes me sleepy. But oh well, try it. It might work for you!
3. Roll The Toxins Away
I’ve talked about my jade roller over on my Instagram a few days ago and even made a how-to guide about it on my stories. Let me just say this, I have honestly never loved a skin care tool as much as I love my jade roller.
I’ve been using mine in the morning and night for the past 2 weeks and I’ve definitely seen so much improvement on my skin. I’ve called it my instant contour fix, my de-puffer wonder, and so many other things because I am such a convert.
It amazes me because it literally just takes 1-2 minutes of my day and I see the effects almost instantly. My skin feels more radiant because of the added boost in circulation, my cheeks and eyes aren’t so puffy in the morning anymore, and I just generally feel like my skincare products (especially my serum) seeps into my skin better. 100% cannot recommend this enough.
A number of people have asked me about the difference of a jade roller as opposed to a rose quartz one, and it’s pretty simple. The jade roller has more intrinsic benefits. It helps in detoxifying, lymphatic drainage, and so on. On the other hand, the rose quartz roller offers more extrinsic benefits and plays a huge hand when it comes to anti-aging needs.
BUT both the jade and rose quartz rollers essentially deliver the same benefits of improved circulation, reduced puffiness, and firmed and smoothed skin. So both will do amazing for your self-care and wellbeing.
4. Multimask, Not Multitask
Some girls multitask when they mask, which means they’re usually on their laptops catching up on work while waiting for their mask to finish. As much as I love the concept of using time wisely and not letting a precious minute go to waste, I find that multitasking during something as simple as a mask sesh throws me completely off guard and makes me switch off from my self-care routine.
Personally, I try to keep my phone as far away from me as possible because I’m always a tap away from answering any emails the like. Instead, I set my laptop up to a video of one of my favorite YouTube vloggers and just watch as I mask. I used to read books while masking before too, but now I feel like I’ve just let social media take over my life full time. Haha!
5. Swipe on Your Fave Lippie Just Because
Let’s be real here. As much of a grandma I can be during Friday nights, there are still days when my husband and I would get the occasional text from friends saying to head out and celebrate. And sometimes, we say “let’s do it” because it’s no fun to be anti-social all the time! Haha!
On the rare chances that we’re out late on a Friday night, I like to swipe on one of my favorite nude lippies. I feel like I go through phases with the colors I put on my lips. I used to love bright reds before, then moved on to Revlon’s Fierce matte lippie — an almost crimson like color), and this year, I’ve been obsessed with nude lippies.
My current favorite is Kat Von D’s everlasting liquid lipstick in the shade Lolita II. I love it so much I’m already on my second tube.
I’ve actually been searching for dupes of it already just in case Kat Von D decides to stop that shade completely (Lord, I hope not), but so far, I haven’t found one that can take its place.
The color is so pretty, you guys. It’s this terracotta nude shade that looks so nice, which is a huge plus for me because sometimes I feel like the search for perfect nude lippies can stress me out.
You know how there used to be that saying that went something like, “give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world”? My version applies to lipsticks. I can’t get enough of them, no matter how many times my husband sighs when he sees me at the makeup aisles.
And those are my self-care tips on a Friday night! I've said this before, but I really do believe that self-care has such a drastic effect on a person's emotional well-being. So this weekend, I hope you treat yourself to a few stress-free minutes of your day. Even the littlest goes a long way.
Have an amazing weekend ahead, everybody!
